Hello my name is Mrs. Southard. I am the science, STEAM, and Science Fair teacher at Miami R-1 Elementary. I have had the pleasure of having this position for 4 years now. In my classes we enjoy a lot of hands-on activities and experiments to reinforce the topics we are learning about. All the students' projects follow the scientific method and the experimental design procedures. We were fortunate enough two years ago to be rewarded with a 3-D printer due to students finishing so many activities in our STEAM curriculum. I hope to instill a passion and love of science in all my students and all my future students!
LAB COATS
The 5th and 6th graders had the opportunity to design their own Lab coats!
Students got to pick their favorite branch of science and use that theme to design their ultimate Lab Coat!

Water Cycle
The 7th graders looked at the different phases of the water cycle. The students used a bunson burner, ice, colored water, and two beakers to represent the different phases. The students witnessed evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
Reynolds v. Store Brands
Our first science class projects for the school year are in the books.
The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders worked to use the scientific method to determine if Reynolds aluminum foil is stronger than the ordinary store brand.
Two out the three test determined that Reynolds aluminum foil is stronger than the ordinary store brand.
