GATE Field Trip
To finish out our Robotics and Coding Unit in the GATE program the students went on a field trip to the Columbia MoreNet program. The students had the opportunity to design and code their own video game, play with the Lego Spike Robotic Kits, experience outer space travel with Augmented Reality, and Drive Sphero Robots around the classroom. We had a great time and would like to thank the MoreNet Program for doing activities like this!
Science Fair
Yesterday, March 4, 2025, Miami R-1 Middle School took 4 students; Bennett Kueker (8th Grade), Charles Tyre (6th Grade), Carter Wilson (6th Grade), and Ulysses Taylor (7th Grade) to the ISEF/MJAS science fair competition in Fayette, MO. Students had to write a scientific research paper, prepare a presentation, complete a display board, and carry out a scientific project that followed the scientific method.
The MJAS competition consisted of students being responsible for presenting their presentation power points and completing a ten page research paper about their project.
The ISEF competition consisted of students being responsible for presenting their display boards and explaining/ demonstrating their projects to a panel of judges. All four students placed in this competition.
Bennett Kueker placed third in the Animal Science category in the ISEF competition.
Charles Tyre placed first in the Chemistry category in the ISEF competition.
Carter Wilson and Ulysses Taylor placed second in the Environmental Engineering category in the ISEF competition.
Mrs. Southard, would like to thank all the students for their hard work and dedication. The passion they have for science is amazing and I know they will move on to do great things. Thank you to all the parents who helped to make their students successful by helping with projects. It takes a community to raise great kids and I’m so glad to have our Miami Community.

House Program
By now, I’m sure you have noticed the food pantry boxes located at the school and community center parking lot. If you have not, please go take a look at them. These are the results of our students hard work and dedication to help members of our community.
In the 2019- 2020 school year, the teachers at Miami Middle School started an incentive program called the “House Program.” Students had the opportunity to learn about character qualities such as: empathy, resiliency, assertiveness, compassion, respect, trust, honesty, and integrity. Students worked together as a team to complete different activities and earn points for demonstrating the behaviors in the classroom. Their project for the compassion month was to develop a way to give back to the community. Students worked and researched the best way to demonstrate this character trait. Students came up with the plan for the little food pantries and that the community and members of the school could collect donations/ fundraise to keep these boxes filled. With the help of community member, Derrick Arnold, this plan came to life. Derrick donated his time and materials to build two little pantries for the Miami Students. The students had a great time painting the boxes and adding their own personal touches. Miami R-1 School will be collecting food donations periodically throughout the school year. We ask that you take what you need and give back in any way that you can. If you are interested in donating, donations can be dropped off at Miami School, we will have a tub right inside the front door for donations. |
